Esta hermosa ranita de grandes ojos rojos y pupila vertical, cuerpo color verde limón intenso, rayas amarillas o anaranjadas al costado y con extremidades delanteras son azules o moradas, es una de las especies de anfibios más hermosos de Costa Rica, y por esto mismo, uno de los símbolos más utilizados para hacer referencia a la riqueza de la fauna costarricense.
En Costa Rica la Rana de Ojos Rojos se encuentra tanto en la vertiente Caribe como en el Pacífico, en las tierras bajas desde el nivel del mar hasta los 1000 metros de altura. Su vida puede durar hasta 5 años y alcanzan tamaños de entre 4 y 7 cm de largo.
Una de las características más interesantes de estas ranitas es su capacidad de camuflaje; cuando duerme durante el día, la Rana de Ojos Rojos puede pasar casi desapercibida. Generalmente se coloca en el revés de la hoja y deja ver solo su parte verde, escondiendo así sus colores brillantes para evitar ser descubierta.

In Costa Rica, the Red Eyed Frog can be found both at the Caribbean and Pacific slopes, in the lowlands, starting at sea level up to 1000 meters of height.
