Tortuguero se localiza en la región norte del país, entre el río Parismina y el río San Juan en la frontera con Nicaragua. Es una zona muy húmeda.
La vegetación del área es típica del bosque tropical muy húmedo, caracterizado por asociaciones vegetales sobresalientes como son los yolillales, pantanos herbáceos, vegetación litoral, bosques altos, bosques sobre lomas, bosques pantanosos y comunidades herbáceas sobre lagunas.
UN TESORO EN ANIMALES EXÓTICOS
La fauna es también abundante y variada; aproximadamente 160 especies de mamíferos, muchos de ellos en peligro de extinción: felinos, monos, perezosos y el manatí entre otros; 400 especies de aves y 52 especies de peces de aguas continentales, donde sobresale el pez gaspar, considerado como un fósil viviente en vías de extinción.
Una de las especies más investigadas y conocidas en Tortuguero, es la tortuga verde, especie que motivó inicialmente la creación del Parque Nacional Tortuguero.

LOS CANALES DE TORTUGUERO
Los Canales de Tortuguero son uno de los principales atractivos de la zona. Interminables canales y meandros; un verdadero laberinto natural rodeado de denso bosque tropical y rica fauna local, donde se pueden ver monos, osos perezosos y aves; además de gran variedad de animales acuáticos como tortugas, caimanes y cocodrilos.
TORTUGAS MARINAS
La playa de Tortuguero atrae a la más grande población anidadora de tortugas marinas, es muy conocida a nivel internacional como una herramienta de investigación científica y de educación ambiental. Es importante tomar en cuenta que todo este proceso, debe de ser supervisado, ya que cualquier ruido o disturbio puede asustar a las tortugas y hacerlas regresar al mar sin terminar su desove.
