Los cocodrilos han poblado el planeta Tierra desde hace más de 200 millones de años y en Tortuguero el más común es el Cocodrilo Americano (Crocodilus acutus). Este imponente animal mide entre dos y tres metros de largo, sin embargo, algunos alcanzan ¡hasta cinco y seis metros!
El peso promedio de un Cocodrilo Americano está entre los 170 y casi 400 kilos, pero los más grandes pueden pesar hasta una tonelada.

- Su lengua es plana y está pegada a la parte inferior de la mandíbula, por lo que no pueden moverla
- Con su mandíbula son capaces de ejercer una presión de más de 3.000 libras
- La amplia capacidad de sus pulmones les permite, estando en movimiento, sumergirse hasta por seis horas. Si se encuentran quietos pueden aguantar dos días
- Se alimentan de tortugas, peces, moluscos, aves acuáticas, cangrejos, ranas, insectos y otros animales como reptiles. Eso sí, no mastican el alimento pero acuden a un truco que les funciona para ayudarse con el proceso digestivo: tragar piedras
- Pueden vivir entre 50 y 100 años, según estimaciones
- Tienen cinco dedos en las patas delanteras y cuatro en las traseras
- Cuando sus dientes se desgastan, les salen unos nuevos
- El sexo del cocodrilo lo determina la temperatura con que se incubó el huevo (bajas temperaturas: hembras / altas temperaturas: machos)
- Si los ves tomando el sol con su mandíbula abierta, es porque están nivelando su temperatura corporal
- Los movimientos ondulatorios de su poderosa cola les permiten nadar ágilmente, a esto se le suma que pegan sus patas al cuerpo para reducir la resistencia al agua
- Cuando están cubiertos de lodo su cuerpo secreta un aceite que hace que el fango resbale

- With its jaw they are capable of perform a pressure of more than 3.000 pounds
- The large capacity of their lungs allows them, in motion, to dive for up to six hours. If they sit still, they can hold their breath for two days
- They eat turtles, fishes, shellfish, water birds, crabs, frogs, insects and other animals like reptiles. They do not chew the food but use a trick that works during the digestive process: to swallow stones
- According to estimations, they can live between 50 to 100 years
- They have five toes on their front legs and four on the rear ones
- When their teeth are wear down, new ones grow
- The sex of the crocodile is determined by the temperature at which the egg is incubated (low temperatures: female / high temperature: males)
- If you see them sunbathing with their jaws open, it’s because they’re leveling the body temperature
- The undulating movements of their powerful tail allow them to swim nimbly, also they stick their legs to the body to reduce water resistance
- When they’re covered in mud their body secretes an oil to make the dirt slip away
