Con sus diferentes tipos de animales, alrededor de 2.000 especies de plantas, 405 de aves y más de 400 de árboles, el Parque Nacional Tortuguero, en la costa del Caribe de Costa Rica, representa un verdadero paraíso natural.
Ubicado a unos 80 kilómetros del centro de la provincia de Limón, se caracteriza por contar con ¡11 hábitats diferentes!, distribuidos en selvas, lagunas, canales de agua, pantanos y playas.
El terreno total del Parque Nacional Tortuguero consiste en 26 mil hectáreas de tierra, mientras que la sección de agua se extiende por 50 mil hectáreas.
Los animales le dan vida a la zona
En Tortuguero muchos turistas quedan maravillados con el desove de tortugas, pero la realidad es que en esta zona la variedad de animales es amplia.
Hacer un recorrido por el parque significará toparse con dantas, manatíes, mapaches, ranas, basiliscos (especie de lagartija que puede correr sobre el agua), iguanas, murciélagos pescadores, pizotes, perezosos, nutrias y tolomucos.
Otros de más cuidado y en peligro de extinción, como el jaguar y el manigordo, también hicieron de Tortuguero su hogar. No en vano éste se considera un destino de turismo ecológico por excelencia.
Y basta con observar los árboles del parque para apreciar tres clases de monos: el Araña que con rápidos movimientos y saltos va de un lado a otro; el mono Congo o Aullador con sus inconfundibles sonidos y el Cariblanco.
Mientras tanto, en los canales de agua y pantanos… los cocodrilos y caimanes muestran sus filosos dientes o simplemente toman el sol.
A todos ellos se suman 405 especies de aves, pero las que más destacan son el martín pescador, pavos reales, loros, tucanes y garzas.
El cielo no es el límite para los árboles de Tortuguero
Si bien es cierto los animales cumplen un papel importante dándole vida y movimiento a la naturaleza, esa labor también recae en diversas plantas y árboles.
Ya sea que crezcan en tierra firme, pantanos o en el agua, los terrenos del Parque Nacional Tortuguero son ideales para el desarrollo de palma de yolillo, lirios y helechos acuáticos, cedro machopilón, canfín y javillo negro, etc.
Además, existen otros como el majestuoso árbol gavilán con sus imponentes 30 o 40 metros de alto, y las plantas herbáceas de más de dos metros de altura.

With its different types of animals, about 2.000 species of plants, 405 of birds and more than 400 of trees, the Tortuguero National Park, at the Costa Rica´s Caribbean coast, is a natural paradise.

The animals bring life to the area
At Tortuguero many tourists get amazed by the spawning of turtles, but the reality is that in this area there´s a wide variety of animals.
