Cada año, las playas de Tortuguero, en el Caribe de Costa Rica, son elegidas por miles de tortugas Baula, Verde y Carey que depositan sus huevos en la arena, dejando atrás las cálidas aguas del mar.
Dicha actividad es conocida como anidamiento y desove de tortugas, y tiene lugar, con mayor fuerza, a partir de marzo.
El Parque Nacional Tortuguero es un orgullo para Costa Rica, por ser el sitio de desove de tortugas de mayor importancia en todo el Hemisferio Occidental.
¿En qué consiste el anidamiento y desove de las tortugas marinas?
El turista que visite Tortuguero en esta época vivirá, sin duda, unas vacaciones exóticas en Costa Rica, pues verá cómo las tortugas marinas, algunas de hasta 500 kilos de peso, salen del agua y rápidamente inundan la arena; luego, eligen el lugar que consideran adecuado -según humedad y temperatura- y comienzan a cavar con sus aletas.
El nido de las tortugas marinas tiene unos 75 centímetros de profundidad, suficientes para depositar hasta ¡100 huevos o más! Esta tarea les toma varias horas, durante las cuales las miradas de asombro de los turistas no cesan.
Cuando la tortuga termina de poner sus huevos, cuidadosamente tapa el hoyo con arena y para eso emplea sus fuertes aletas traseras y delanteras. Cuando está satisfecha con su obra, retorna al mar y nunca más volverá para conocer a sus crías.
Dos meses más tarde, las pequeñas tortuguitas comenzarán a romper sus huevos y con grandes esfuerzos escalarán unas encima de otras hasta salir del nido. Luego, les espera un intenso recorrido hasta el mar, que las cobijará como una vez lo hizo su madre.

What is the nesting and spawning of sea turtles?
The tourists, without a doubt, will have an exotic vacation in Costa Rica, as they will see how sea turtles, some with a weight of even 500 kilos, leave the water and quickly flood the arena; then, they choose the place they consider appropriate -according to humidity and temperature- and start digging with their fins.
The nest of the sea turtles is about 75 inches deep, enough to lay up 100 eggs or more! This task will take them several hours, during which the tourists will look at them with nothing but astonishment.
When the turtle finished laying its eggs, carefully covers the hole with sand and for that it uses its strong front and back fins. When it’s satisfied with its work, the sea turtle returns to the ocean and will never go back to meet its breeding.
Two months later, the little turtles begin to break their eggs and to climb, with great effort, on top of each other to leave the nest. Then, awaits for them an intense journey to the sea, which will provide shelter as once their mother did.
