[:es]Se habla mucho de Tortuguero, como un lugar mágico, exótico y hasta inhóspito. Una pequeña perla en el Caribe costarricense que es orgullo de nacionales e imán para los turistas. ¿Pero qué hace de destino natural un lugar tan especial y tan distinto de tantos?
Lo primero que habría que decir es que Tortuguero es un paraíso natural, solo penetrable a través de un impresionante laberinto de canales de agua, o por aire, en avioneta. Es un pueblo en pleno siglo XXI, donde no hay semáforos, ni calles, ni carros. En los años 1940s las compañías madereras llegaron a esta zona y comenzaron a explotarla, pero 20 años después comenzó un fuerte movimiento de conservación que se mantiene hasta hoy.
Los que deciden ir a Tortuguero por tierra, toman, al llegar al pequeño muelle de Pavona, una lancha de servicio público o una privada, que los llevará a su destino, ya sea en el pueblo de Tortuguero, a un lado del Gran Canal, o en alguno de los hoteles y lodges que se ubican del otro lado.
Ese es el primer momento mágico; navegar por un río rodeado de la naturaleza salvaje del Caribe costarricense que parece no haber sido tocada por la mano del hombre.
Conforme se avanza en el recorrido, se pueden apreciar en las copas de los árboles aves exóticas, monos, y quizá hasta un perezoso que interrumpe brevemente su siesta para ver pasar a los nuevos visitantes.

Pero la mayor parte de los turistas que llegan, tienen un propósito muy claro, ir a las playas del Parque Nacional Tortuguero para ver el anidamiento y desove de las tortugas que llegan cada año a estas costas, entre ellas: la tortuga verde que es la principal visitante (de julio a octubre), baula y carey (ambas entre febrero y marzo), y cabezona, en menor medida.
¡Y comienza el espectáculo! Con un guía que utiliza un foco de luz infrarroja, la prohibición de tomar fotos o videos, y caminando en silencio, cientos de visitantes llegan cada noche en temporada de desove, para disfrutar de este impresionante evento natural. Pero, aunque la llegada de las tortugas a la playa es el principal atractivo de este destino natural, el resto del año los turistas también pueden disfrutar de muchas otras riquezas que esta zona tiene para ofrecer. Por ejemplo, adentrándose al Parque Nacional por sus canales de agua, donde se aprecia la naturaleza de primera mano, con caimanes que apenas asoman su cabeza sobre el agua, garzas que se paran en una pata, y monos aulladores que se escuchan desde las copas de árboles gigantes; realizando excursiones hacia el Cerro Tortuguero, para disfrutar de la vista en el punto más alto del lugar; practicando canopy en el exuberante bosque tropical, o solamente relajándose en el hotel, al lado de la piscina con vistas al Gran Canal.

The first thing I should say is that Tortuguero is a natural destination only penetrable through an impressive labyrinth of water channels, or by air, flying. It is a village in the 21st century, with no traffic lights, streets or cars. In the 1940s, timber companies arrived to this area and began to exploit it, but 20 years later a strong conservation movement begun and it has continued until today.
Those who decide to go to Tortuguero by land have to take a public or private boat service, at the dock of Pavona, which will lead them to their destination, either in the village of Tortuguero, at one side of the Grand Canal, or in any of the hotels and lodges located on the other side.
This is the first magic moment; to navigate a river surrounded by the wild nature of the Costa Rican Caribbean that seems untouched by man. The green sea turtle, which is the main visitor, arrives from July to October, the Leatherback and hawksbill both arrive between February and March, and the loggerhead, to a lesser extent.

With a tour guide using a source of infrared light, the prohibition of taking photos or videos, and walking in silence, hundreds of visitors come each night during the spawning season to enjoy this impressive natural event.
